Proposed shield law makes progress on the hill

May 24, 2007

Legislation that would make Massachusetts the 33rd state with statutory protection for reporters’ confidential sources is pending in the state Legislature, with a hearing expected in June.  Prince Lobel partner Jeffrey Newman, an originator of the bill, is working closely with media organizations throughout the Commonwealth to support passage.  If passed, law would prevent the release the names of confidential sources of Massachusetts reporters, except in certain limited circumstances.  To see how other states are handling the issue of confidential source protection, please see attached documents.  For more information on the proposed shield law, please contact Jeffrey Newman at jnewman@PrinceLobel.com.
