Jeffrey A. Newman represents traditional and online media companies including television stations and newspapers as well as web based media, including Global News Enterprises, LLC, an international news service headquartered in Boston.  His services include First Amendment issues, intellectual property, privacy matters, business and corporate transactions and the development of policies and practices for newsrooms and web-based media companies.

Jeff offers a variety of legal advice including prepublication and pre-broadcast review for book publishers, newspapers and television stations; defending claims of defamation and defending reporters against subpoenas.  Jeff is presently spearheading an effort to pass a reporter’s shield law in Massachusetts and was recently appointed to The Federal Shield Law Coalition.  Jeff also handles copyright and trademark registration and defends and prosecutes infringement cases.

An experienced trial attorney, Jeff has handled over 50 cases to jury and was co-lead trial counsel in the clergy abuse cases on behalf of the victims of sexual abuse.

In addition to his extensive media related work, Jeff’s corporate practice involves representation of startup and emerging companies in medical and science area.  He presently represents Fission Pharmaceuticals relating to genetically engineered cells to find new drug compounds.

Before law school, Jeff was a newspaper reporter and photojournalist who interviewed Charles Manson and Gary Gilmore’s fiancé Nicole Barrett for which he was featured in Norman Mailer’s Executioner’s Song.
